First ask yourself this question: when was the last time you had a conversation with someone and you just felt like they “got” you? Been awhile? Then maybe you’re in need of a community audit.
There are all different types of communities and they all serve their own purposes. My gym communities keep me motivated and accountable. My girlfriends tell me the truth and remind me to have fun. My mom friends affirm that I’m doing a good-ish job with my kids. My brother and my cousins know how crazy our family is, but at least we’ve all got the same brand of crazy.
When I was new to the business life I started to realize that our lifestyle was different and that none of the people in those groups could really understand. We found that we couldn’t relate to people on some levels. That’s about the time that Adam started to search for circles who could help and advise him on how to maneuver this world. It wasn’t until then that I recognized that we weren’t the only ones. Adam joined a group that did couple retreats once a year and it became a tradition. The people we met there became lifelong friends and they turned out to be the people who really “got” where we were coming from.
As time went on and our needs changed, so did the groups. Now that we’re in a new phase of growth we’re actively looking to expand and that’s how we came upon the possibility of the leadership summit we’re attending this week.
Now, let me tell you, it’s not in my nature to just up and leave the country with less than a week’s notice. It certainly hasn’t been easy to get everything here covered, but the prospect of widening our community is extremely exciting! Sometimes you just have to say YES and jump. You have to position yourself in front of the right people so that things can align. Even when things aren’t planned exactly. I can only imagine the possibilities and opportunities that’ll come from this YES. Oh the places you’ll go, the things you’ll see, the people you’ll meet, the connections you’ll make, the future you’ll forge.
So how important is community? This is how we build a better business world. This is how we get tighter connections at the micro and macro level. We find like minded people to lend to the expansion and growth of the network. A community can change the shape of an idea and the path of a plan. A community has influence and impact on your life, on your choices, and on your business. It can help or hinder, so we’d better really consider the ones we choose.
So, again, I ask, when was the last time you felt like somebody just “got” you? Is there anything you could say YES to that would better position you for growth in your communities?
